Ow...my soul...

Well boys and girls, I saw a movie tonight...that movie was War of the Worlds.

That's all I'm going to say, except for those of you who haven't read the book or seen the original film probably wont want to read this unless you want the experience to be ruined. And trust me, if you've seen or read either, it will be ruined...

Holy Tap-Dancing Christ, where do I begin? I suppose I could bust out the old Grey Fox Scale...for those of you unfamiliar with the scale, it goes like this.

0 - 1 A cockroach could've crapped better
2 - 3 Not even Jesus can save this
4 - 5 At least it didn't suck too bad
6 - 7 It could've been better but wasn't bad
8 - 9 That was actually good, I wanna see it again
10 - That blew me away!

Thusly using this scale, you will know what I thought of this..."movie"

Special Effects - 8: Okay, so I do have to admit a lot of the visual effects and such were astounding. Nothing jaw dropping though, nothing really new, but enough to make this a wonderful visual spectical. The collapse of buildings, explosions and even the weapons the aliens themselves used all look very cool. Even the way the people vaporized when hit with the beam was cool. The visual effects were wonderful.

Soundtrack: - 7: The movie's soundtrack wasn't too bad either. The music scored was pretty good, however nothing that made you get to the edge of your seat. The pure silence did enough of that, and yes, there was a lot of silence. The sounds the alien ships themselves made were pretty cool too. Sort of a foghorn mixed with machinery. Over all, the ambience was all right.

Plot: - 3: This is where the film loses in so many ways. Taking the story of both the book and the original film, it basically blended it with good graphics, good sound...and tossed in a heaping bowl of suck for taste. To compair this to the original film since it's been so long since I read the novel...
First point. Since when did the story become about a guy trying to keep his family alive from these creatures and other people? I always thought it was one man trying to keep himself alive. I guess for dramatic value they'd stick some emo kid in with a smartass eight year old girl.
Second point. Too...much...like the Day After Tomorrow! Just replace the storms with aliens and that's pretty much the film. People running, people dying, people hiding out, oh noes, disaster! More running, aliens all gone, celebrate, yay!
Third point. The aliens I don't think ever harvested bodies to survive and keep their ships running. In fact I think they just killed pretty much everything they could aim their lasers at. All this harvesting bullshit was just that...bullshit to make the film maybe more "edgy" or something...
Fourth point. During the entire original film, not a single ship was taken down until the end of it when the disease came and killed the aliens. Tom Cruise however magically shoved three grenades into the thing and destroyed it from the inside...Ow....my head...the bullshit is getting too heavy.
I think I'm out of points now...I'll call you should I come up with anymore.

Acting - 4:Dakota Fanning, cute, not a bad little actress for a girl her age. Tom Cruise, shitty, should be ashamed of himself and apologize publicly for this and Scientology. Justin Chatwin, wrong place, wrong time, you should've waited and found another movie to come into. Miranda Otto, Lord of the Rings to War of the Worlds...m'dear, you should've stuck with Jackson.

Overall - 3: Let's look at it this way...if they had stuck to the original story, the original film and simply added a few special effects, amped up, maybe the ships and the creatures, just a tad and kept everything else the same, I wouldn't be writing this, in fact I would be telling you how wonderful this picture was probably. But sadly, Speilburgh crapped on everything and said "Here...here's a film for the modern age of today, something you can all enjoy." Go back to war films Steven...

...I need to lay down...nobody call or knock for a few days...I'll be too busy crying in the corner.
